Cooking Class

07 May Cooking Class

What a treat I had today. I’m part of a local garden club that meets once a month. We always have our last meeting in May until we gather again in the fall so we usually do a luncheon to go along with our meeting to end the year with a bang. This time our program person found a wonderful chef to come in and do a cooking demo. I know, I know you’re thinking the same thing one of my sons said aloud “what in the heck does that have to do with gardening?!?!” Well…..if you count the fact that we as gardeners care about where our produce comes from and love to grow and enjoy seasonal offerings from local farmers markets and groceries it all fits together. Or….. if those mental gymnastics are too much for you, you can just be like me and say who cares how it goes together because it’s awesome no matter how you package it!

Chef Charles Vollmar from Epicurean Exchange came out to my home and whipped up some amazing treats for all of us.

Just look at these mouth-watering soup and salads.

Fresh strawberry, mozzarella and arugula with pomegranate-quince vinegar

Tuscan Chicken chopped salad with kale, bell peppers, artichoke hearts and kalamata olives

Minestrone with white beans, asparagus and Tuscan kale

He also brought the most amazing olive oil cake that he enhanced with a dollop of sweetened mascarpone-buttercream, some chopped, toasted almonds and a drizzle of olive oil. YUM! And best of all I got to keep the leftovers since it was a my house. Winner, winner, chicken dinner!!

Chef Charles has partnered with a local olive oil company and uses their products. I was so happy to see that it is also one of my favorite spots in the Bay Area and a place that I tell everyone they NEED to go to for all their olive oil and vinegar. If you happen to be in the San Francisco Bay Area I would highly encourage you to head over to Amphora and check out all of their olive oils and vinegars. It’s life-changing. Ok, maybe not life-changing but you’ll be hooked.

Now I must be off to have another slice of that olive oil cake and contemplate joining Chef Charles on one of his upcoming cooking trips to Spain or France. A girl can dream right.

Of course you wouldn’t invite me to this.
